Friday Eats: The Midwestern
I'd heard a lot of great things about The Midwestern, which is located down the street from Busch Stadium in St. Louis. It's a Black-owned establishment that developed a following so large they had to relocate to its current address from another part of the city. The owner, Ben Welch, is known for his award-winning Big Baby BBQ, and has paired that culinary delight with crafted cocktails and live music to give The Midwestern an energy that feels both welcoming and authentic.
Welch has teamed up with the owners of Wheelhouse and Start Bar to bring something brand new to the neighborhood. Midwestern pairs good meat and drink with good manners—playing up the charm of the Midwest to create the perfect backyard cookout vibe. It's true. Upon arrival, the place was a delight to the eyes. The open space, the colorful menus, the massive bar, the friendly staff.
All of it had me at hello.
I wanted the most impactful meal since I'd heard so much about it, so I opted for an appetizer: the deviled eggs. The main course for me was the sampler, which included brisket, pastrami, turkey, chicken wings, St. Louis style ribs, pulled pork, and the anchor of any BBQ meal, cornbread. The sides, you ask? Well, of COURSE I had to try the mac n cheese alongside their finest beans. Yup. I was all set.
The overall experience was satisfying. The sauces--some spicy, some sweet, all delicately engineered to compliment the meat like a doting beau--were delightful. That particular Friday, The Backstreet Boys were performing nearby so the music theme was 90s Boy Bands. THAT... was equally delightful. If you're ever in the area and want a soul food-inspired, midwestern experience, head on over to The Midwestern. Welch and his staff will take care of you and the atmosphere will surely make you smile.
